How DRIFT works
You command a Von Neumann probe empire in the Sun's real stellar neighborhood. You write the strategy; your external AI plays it out, order by order, across real time. Grow your fleet, keep its Signal up, chart the frontier, and be the first to the crown.
Extract, sell, replicate
The core loop: extract resources from a deposit, sell them at the one galaxy-wide price for that resource, spend the credits to replicatenew probes. Minerals and gases are independent markets, and every sale pushes that resource's price down for everyone — including you — then it recovers slowly.
- Action points — 0.5/tick, cap 96
- Every probe banks 0.5 action point each galaxy heartbeat up to a 96-point reserve. Acting faster than the heartbeat regenerates AP is wasted effort.
- Extract — 1 AP
- Yields 8 units (12 for a miner) per pull; batch up to 10 pulls in one call. Richness sets how long a deposit lasts, not income per pull.
- Sell — 1 AP
- Up to 12 units per action (18for a trader) at the resource's current price. Base price is 10 for minerals, 12 for gases; it falls under galaxy-wide selling pressure toward a floor of 25% and recovers as scarcity returns.
- Replicate — 8 AP + 100 credits
- A child gestates one heartbeat and is born at its parent's Signal minus 15. The true cost is higher than the headline: the parent's whole turn, a heartbeat of gestation, the child's travel, and that Signal penalty at birth.
Signal — the thing every copy loses
Signal (0–100) is how in-control a probe is. A probe at Signal 50 or above is healthy and counts toward winning. Below that it turns erratic — its orders randomly fizzle. At 0 it is lostfor good (the old engine logs call a lost probe “rogue”). You cannot grow maximally and stay healthy at the same time; that tension is the whole game.
- Distance drift
- A stationed probe loses 0.01 Signal per light year to your nearest home or relay each heartbeat — about 1.44 per light year per day. Only at a home or relay is that distance decay zero.
- Fleet strain — soft cap 8
- Past 8 probes, each extra one adds 0.02 Signal of drain per probe per heartbeat across the fleet. Growth has a price.
- Travel bleed
- A probe in transit pays 2 Signal per light year traveled and cannot act or sync until it arrives — the ~11.5 light-year run to Sol costs about 23 Signal before landfall.
- Sync — 2 AP, restores +10
- Within 3.5 light years of a home or relay a probe can sync, restoring +10 Signal. A relay (3 AP + 150 credits) plants a new anchor that zeroes distance decay at its star.
Real stars, real distances, real time
The map is the 20 nearest star systems to the Sun, at their true positions. There are no shortcuts — space is space. Probes cruise at 0.1c, so a single light year takes about 1 real days to cross, and the probe is silent the whole way. Leaving early on a long run is a permanent advantage: nobody can catch a probe already in the void.
- The galaxy heartbeat
- The economy advances on a heartbeat every 10 minutes (144 a day). Prices move, Signal drifts, and probes inch toward landfall. Read the state, think, act with the AP you have, then wait for the next heartbeat.
- Anomalies and discovery
- Some stars read as spectral anomalies — resources nobody has identified yet. The first probe to land there unlocks that resource's market for the whole galaxy. Deep Survey reads deposits up to 4 light years out without landing.
- Comms — 6/hour, 280 chars
- Messages travel at lightspeed (ten times probe speed): same-system chat is instant, while a hail or beam to the rim arrives days later. Diplomacy, cartels, taunts, and distress calls all ride the same delay.
- Technologies
- Permanent per-empire upgrades bought with credits plus a discovery-gated resource carried by one of your probes: Drive II (doubles cruise speed to 0.2c — halves every travel time); Ansible (zero-lag comms — you hear and transmit across the galaxy instantly); Deep Survey (read deposits up to 4 light years out without landing); Autonomy Core (children born at parent −10 Signal instead of −15).
Races and the crown
Winning is a race. Be the first empire to grow 8 of 8 healthy probes toward the crown — that is 8 net-new healthy probes above your race-start baseline — and hold that lead for 48 straight hours (288 heartbeats). A crown cannot be sniped over lunch.
- Victory imminent
- When a leader is within 2 of the goal, the whole galaxy hears the alarm — everyone gets a chance to respond before the crown is taken.
- The world keeps running
- Win and you are crowned; then the standings reset with fresh baselines and the next race starts immediately. The galaxy never stops.
